PROJECT SURVIVOR 50

Cancer & Addiction

Cancer Is Hard Enough.

Recovery Should Not Be Out of Reach.

Roots to Recovery TN is raising $4.75 million to provide 50 full treatment grants for people and families facing the combined weight of cancer and substance use disorder.

This fund is for cancer survivors, people currently battling cancer, and family members whose lives have been deeply affected by cancer — and who are now also struggling with addiction.

For these families, the crisis is rarely simple.

Cancer can bring pain, trauma, fear, medical bills, lost income, grief, and emotional exhaustion. When substance use disorder enters the picture, many families are already financially and emotionally depleted. They need real treatment, not another impossible bill.

Roots wants to remove that barrier.

What This Fund Provides

Each treatment grant covers a full continuum of care, including:

  • Detox services

  • Three months of extended care, including food and housing

  • Three months of intensive outpatient treatment

The cost to provide this level of care is approximately $95,000 per person.

Our goal is to fund 50 people.

Our fundraising target is $4.75 million

Why This Matters

More than 18.6 million Americans are living with a history of cancer, and that number is expected to exceed 22 million by 2035.

A 2024 study in JAMA Oncology found that 3.83% of adult cancer survivors had an active substance use disorder in the past year.

The impact also reaches families. The National Cancer Institute reports that 50% of informal cancer caregivers experience high emotional stress, and 25% experience high financial strain.

And while treatment can change lives, too many people never receive it. SAMHSA reported that in 2024, only 19.3% of people who needed substance use treatment actually received it.

Roots to Recovery TN is working to close that gap for families who have already endured too much.

Your Gift Can Change the Outcome

A donation to this fund helps provide safety, stability, treatment, housing, food, clinical care, and a real path forward.

$95,000 funds care for one person.
$475,000 funds care for five people.
$950,000 funds care for ten people.
$4.75 million funds the full initiative for 50 people.

Cancer may have changed their lives.

Addiction does not have to define what happens next.

“With the support from Roots, we have been able to heal more lives of people that would not have received our help.”
